Glass Coatings

Improving Glass Durability & Performance

About Monobutyltin Trichloride (MBTC)

What are Glass Coatings?

A specific organotin compound, monobutyltin trichloride (MBTC), is used in the glass industry to form thin tin oxide coatings on bottles, jars, and flat glass. These coatings: reduce scratching and breakage, improve thermal performance, and help later surface treatments adhere better.

How Organotin Chemistry Strengthens Modern Glass Packaging

For decades, organotin compounds have supported glass manufacturing by providing durable hot-end coatings. Monobutyltin trichloride (MBTC) is applied to newly formed hot glass and converted to a thin tin dioxide coating. This protective surface improves abrasion resistance, preserves container strength, supports lightweighting, and enables reliable high-speed production and handling.
